Somatform disorder is a catch-all phrase for a few different disorders....I have regular anxiety (general anxiety, along with OCD, phobias, etc.) and some of my anxiety is expressed as physical symptoms such as dizziness, pains, headaches, shaking, etc. (neurological symtpoms for which they haven't found any cause). Therefore they diagnosed me with "Somatform Disorder" nearly 15 years ago. I've always just said I have an anxiety disorder. I keep to myself, lead a quiet (too quiet) life and now my therapist has had me keeping track of one of my symptoms (start of CBT) and symptoms are coming out again despite my meds. I guess they have to be there in order to deal with them but it's been a difficult week facing these things again when for years I've ignored them and distracted myself from them. Oiy - though I've dealt with OCD and generalized anxiety for years I've managed to "hide" from the rest of it...facing it is difficult. I feel like
if I let it all out I'll explode, and then they'll discover there's some other mental illness I have that's even more difficult to cope with and...well, you all know how those thoughts go :) I think I am going to bump up my next therapist appointment. Thanks for listening.

Okay quickly I did a fast link to this.
They seem to keep changing the names.
Part of it seems to once have been called hysterical paralysis.
And yes, I was once diagnosed with this.
Panic attacks were once anxiety attacks. Now they are different although I still insist on the term anxiety attack. There IS a clinical difference now. But I keep forgetting what it is. Although it seems when I am reminded of it, I suffer both.
But please Kate, explain your definition of this new term and how it affects you.

have a panic attack is that it will pass
whether it passes quickly or slowly
depends whether I drop the idea of it
being dangerous or not.
